UI Software Engineer (C++/Qt)

Build Wizard's user-facing features across C++ and Qt — an implementation-focused role, feature by feature, interaction by interaction.

Apply for this role

Why this role matters

"Designed by editors, for editors" is our actual GTM positioning, not a slogan. Resolve parity at V1 is a hard requirement, because professional editors can't switch to something that's only good because of AI — the base software has to be excellent on its own. You're one of the people who makes that true, feature by feature, interaction by interaction.

About the role

We're looking for a mid-level UI Software Engineer to build Wizard's user-facing features across C++ and Qt. This is an implementation-focused role — most of your time is spent in the production codebase.

Wizard's interface is built primarily with Qt Widgets and custom-painted Qt components, with growing QML integration. You'll work from product requirements and design direction from our Product & Design Lead — Figma designs, wireframes, established interface patterns, or a description of the desired workflow — and turn that into polished, maintainable software, resolving interaction details and usability issues along the way.

What you'll do

  • Implement production user interfaces using C++ and Qt, primarily through Qt Widgets and custom-painted components, with QML where used.
  • Build or extend the C++ application behavior, data models, widgets, services, and UI-facing interfaces required by each feature.
  • Own moderately scoped UI features from implementation planning through testing, review, and release.
  • Translate designs, wireframes, and product requirements into responsive application behavior.
  • Make technical and interaction decisions within established product, design, and architectural guidelines.
  • Develop reusable Qt widgets and QML components, controls, themes, and desktop interaction patterns.
  • Debug issues across the widget, custom-painting, QML, and application-logic layers, including state, lifecycle, performance, and platform-specific behavior.
  • Write tests, participate in code and design reviews, and collaborate with product, design, QA, and engineering teammates.

What we're looking for

  • At least three years of professional software-development experience.
  • Professional experience shipping production desktop applications using C++ and Qt.
  • Strong working knowledge of modern C++.
  • Experience building C++/Qt applications that connect user interfaces to application state, data models, and services.
  • Experience creating reusable QWidget-based UI components and controls.
  • Hands-on experience implementing production UI with QML and Qt Quick Controls.
  • Experience building complex, stateful user interfaces — not only forms, dashboards, or basic CRUD applications.
  • Experience with video-editing software like Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or other similar creative applications.
  • Familiarity with Figma and design-to-development handoff.
  • The ability to debug behavior across frontend and application-logic layers.
  • A practical understanding of usability, interaction design, visual hierarchy, and interface consistency.
  • Experience with Git, CMake, automated testing, and collaborative code review.

Equivalent professional experience is valued in place of a specific degree.

Nice to have

  • Experience building cross-platform desktop applications for macOS, Windows, or Linux.
  • Experience profiling and optimizing Qt painting, QML rendering, and overall UI responsiveness.
  • Experience with custom rendering, animation, media playback, accessibility, or localization.
  • Familiarity with Qt styling and painting systems such as QStyle, QPalette, stylesheets, or QPainter.

How to apply

Include your résumé or LinkedIn profile and examples of production interfaces you've implemented using C++ and Qt — screenshots, code samples, portfolio work, or project descriptions that make your individual contribution clear. Public source code isn't required; we care about what you built, the decisions you made, and how it worked for users.

About Wizard

Every so often, a new technology redefines how stories get told: the printing press, the telephone, radio, the film camera, the cutting room, television, the digital camera, non-linear editing. We think we're at the start of the next one, and we intend to build the company that defines it.

Wizard is a research, innovation, engineering, and manufacturing company built to be the Bell Labs of creative tooling — one clear mission, one system, built to last. Adobe took creative professionals from analog to digital: Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and After Effects defined how a generation creates. But Adobe was built for that paradigm — pixels, timelines, layers, keyframes. It won't rebuild itself for the AI age; it will bolt AI onto software that's decades old. We're building what comes next, from scratch.

Our philosophy is creative as code: every decision editable, controllable, composable — never generative slop you regenerate and hope for the best. Controllability over convenience. Artist integrity over automation. Taste over throughput.

Wizard is the sister company to Story Co, a $6M-revenue production company that is Wizard's first customer and dogfooding partner — every Story production moves onto Wizard by V1. Separate legal entity, separate cap table, same mission.
